Bombers blank Sandy: Geelong over Jays

Kingsley Collins, Wednesday, 10 March 2010

ESSENDON 4 defeated SANDRINGHAM 0

The State League Club Championship is still up for grabs after the Bombers blanked Sandringham to draw level with Waverley at the top of the Division One table.

Import David Whigham threw a blinder for the Dons, conceding just the one hit  - to Jock Allen - which didn't come until the last of his eight innings of work.

With Scott McIntyre unavailable and Manager Russell Spear only coming into the game to close out the last, the re-jigged Essendon lineup played solid defence behind the rejuvenated rightie.

In throwing the complete game, Matt Holmes did an outstanding job for the Royals, with the Bombers only getting away in the top of the fifth.

Michael Pollock and Adrian Kelly hit safely and Dean McIntyre walked to load the bases. Aaron Sayers singled for one, Tim Sullivan's sacrifice fly scored another and a Josh Davies double - one of his two for the night - drove in the rest of the runs scored in the game.

GEELONG 10 defeated BONBEACH 7

The Baycats came out ahead in a high-scoring encounter that had no bearing on final placings.

With the final round on Saturday, Bonbeach will finish eleventh while Geelong - now fourth - has a lesser percentage than third-placed Blackburn and will remain in that position regardless of the outcome of its game against Essendon.

Real interest in Saturday's round will be in top placing. If Essendon wins (against Geelong) and Waverley loses to Sandringham, the Bombers will finish on top of the ladder and will meet Geelong in the Semi-Final series. If the Wildcats win, they will match up against the Baycats.
