Lynne Cumming, LVBA, Tuesday, 16 June 2009SALE RANGERS NOTCH UP FIRST WIN Sale Rangers notched up their first win for the season, defeating Traralgon Redsox 6 – 5 in the International Power/Mitsui Loy Yang B, Latrobe Valley Baseball Association A Grade competition, played at Traralgon on Sunday. This turned into a battle of the pitchers, with Rangers’ Greg Johnston dominating for the first three innings, keeping Redsox scoreless until the fourth where they managed to bring home three runs. Rangers got off to a good start scoring five runs in the first two innings, which helped to keep them in front for the entire game. Jude Power took the mound for Redsox in the third inning and the Rangers’ batting rally slowed down almost immediately with Power taking 15 strikeouts for the game, making a combined total of 29 strikeouts over the nine innings when added with Johnston’s tally of 14. Both sides struggled to score after the fifth, each only able to bring in 1 run over the last four innings, resulting in the final score. Better players for Rangers were Greg Johnston, Andrew Norman and Dylan Adams along with Jude Power, Owen Godenzi and Brain Spiteri for Redsox. At Newborough, Churchill Braves took the win 10 – 5 over Moe/Newborough Dodgers, in what started out as close battle with neither side scoring for the first two innings. Errors played a big part in the final score with several by Dodgers costing them 6 unearned runs and the game, while Braves only gave up 1 unearned run on the back of three unforced errors. Errors aside, there was some brilliant outfield plays by Dodgers’ Brett Wilson (5) and Tim Tobias (2) and excellent pitching by Braves’ Matt Prior making it tough for Dodgers, with Prior taking 12 strikeouts for the game. Better players for Braves were Prior, Ben Laux and Jason Bennett together with Wilson, Ash Poxon and Tobias for Dodgers. A GRADE LADDER:- 1 Churchill Braves, 2 Traralgon Redsox, 3 Moe/Newborough Dodgers, 4 Sale Rangers, 5 Morwell Cougars. B GRADE A very one-sided game was seen at Sale with Traralgon Redsox taking a convincing win 18 – 3 over Rangers. Redsox took charge from the start of the game with 14 runs from 11 hits over the first two innings making it tough for the young Rangers to make any headway. Better players for Redsox were Michael Warne who pitched a great game and batted well, Wayne Beames, Dylan Freitag and Matt Little along with Adam Carroll, Keith Butterwick and Hannah Jackson for Rangers. Dodgers were convincing at Newborough taking the win 16 – 3 over Churchill Braves in another one-sided game. Strong batting by Dodgers coupled with effective fielding, kept them in front from the start, Braves playing catch up for the entire game. Better players for Dodgers were Kirk Went, Brenton Faltum and Roy Simpson together with Greg Shields, Tim Bellerby and David Wood for Braves. B GRADE LADDER:- 1 Traralgon Redsox, 2 Moe/Newborough Dodgers, 3 Churchill Braves, 4 Sale Rangers, 5 Morwell Cougars. C GRADE A close final score line was the result Traralgon, Redsox just taking the win 9 – 7 over Sale Rangers. Scores were 7 all at the bottom of the second inning, but good pitching by Peter Hornstra kept Rangers bats quiet for the remainder of the game, while Redsox managed to score 1 run in each of the last two innings. Better players for Redsox were Wayne Beames, Scott Pollerd and Hornstra along with Tim Hector, Brendan Heyman and Rhiannon Smith for Rangers. It was a homerun rally at Newborough, with Churchill Braves amassing 7, 2 coming courtesy of Cameron Cooen, this coupled with strong fielding left Moe/Newborough Dodgers struggling until the final inning where they scored 7 runs, which was too little too late, with Braves taking a convincing 25 – 7 win. Better players for Braves were Cooen, Greg Shields and Gary Larkin together with Dave Ferguson, Jo Porter and Paul Luke for Dodgers. C GRADE LADDER:- 1 Traralgon Redsox, 2 Churchill Braves, 3 Sale Rangers, 4 Moe/Newborough Dodgers, 5 Morwell Cougars COLTS With 2 players down Redsox were going to struggle but Rangers showed good sportsmanship, loaning two players, namely Matt Boothman and Nick Tease, to create a close contest, the final score 7 – 5 in favour of Rangers. Better players for rangers were James Jackson, Tim Hector and Nicole Garner along with Linden Goodman, Wes Duggan and Shane Robinson for Redsox. Braves were always going to struggle, being two players short and no loaners available they tried valiantly but went down 26 – 3 to Dodgers. Better players for Dodgers were Nathan Simpson, Sam Fraser and Brenton Faltum together with Cameron Cooen, Luke Hamilton and Floyd Haines for Braves. COLTS LADDER:- 1Sale Rangers, 2 Traralgon Redsox, 3 Moe/Newborough Dodgers, 4 Churchill Braves, 5 Morwell Cougars. UNDER 10 TEE BALL In the only Tee ball game played last weekend, Moe/Newborough Dodgers defeated Churchill Braves 25 – 21, in a very close game. Better players for Dodgers were Benn Zomer, Nicole Faltum, Ashley Montgomery and Seth Slade along with Baylen Reilly, Cayden Hansworth, Taylor Bennett and Alex Jenkins for Braves. TEE BALL LADDER:- 1 Traralgon Redsox, 2 Morwell Cougars, 3 Moe/Newborough Dodgers, 4 Churchill Braves. Next week Morwell Cougars play host to Traralgon Redsox, while Moe/Newborough Dodgers travel to Sale to meet Rangers. UNDER 16 CHAMPIONSHIP SQUAD SELECTED The International Power/Mitsui Loy Yang B, Latrobe Valley Baseball Association Under 16 Squad has been selected and will travel to Wangaratta this weekend to compete at the State Under 16 Baseball Championships. The team consists of Dale Simpson, Jake Bargwanna, Nathan Robinson and Andrew Bloomfield from Moe/Newborough Dodgers, Linden and Damien Goodman, Wes Duggan, Michael Adams, Shane Robinson and Ryan Frith from Traralgon Redsox, James Jackson, Tim Hector, Brad Taylor and Tom Kelly from Sale Rangers. The squad will be accompanied by Coaches Roy Simpson and David Bloomfield from Moe/Newborough, Manager Darryl Jackson from Sale and Scorer Tania Bloomfield from Moe/Newborough, the Umpire is Clyde Cumming from Morwell. |
